ILOILO CITY, Philippines – Members of the Iloilo Press Club (IPC) break the ground for the IPC Subdivision for press people.

“This is one of the best things in life and this is  not for free,” Iloilo Gov. Arthur D. Defensor, Sr., reminds press people.

The groundbreaking, held March 14, at the site, Brgy. San Jose, San Miguel, was followed by an inaugural ceremony at the Hotel Del Rio.

San Miguel town is 15 kilometers northwest of this central Philippine City.

IPC interim president Rommel Ynion donated a hectare to the IPC where he will erect uniform housing structures that in turn will be turned over to beneficiaries, only those who have no houses of their own.

Defensor explains that the new homes “are not for free because much is expected of media people” in upgrading their skills and advocacy “for truth, fairness and justice.”

The donor, Ynion, 40, appears uncomfortable with platitudes heaped by colleagues on him, jokingly dismissing them as “eulogies”. He said: “You got it all wrong. The message I want to deliver is not about Rommel Ynion and his generosity: i’ts about hope and helplessness.”

He recalls he has been “homeless and hopeless before” and feels the “helplessness of one who has a cellphone but is useless because I have run out of battery”.

“Now I want to spread the message of hope” that we can live up to our obligation of informing our people as we try to overcome poverty.

Public officials who joined Ynion in
the ground breaking included Iloilo Gov. Arthur D. Defensor, Sr., Iloilo City Rep. Jerry Treñas and Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, Pavia Mayor Arcadio Gorriceta and Passi Mayor Jesry Palmares.
